Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. To market your small business for it, put together a festive collection and gift boxes, announce them to your existing customers first, run one clear offer that protects your margin, make ordering and delivery easy before the big days, and follow up after the festival. Keep every claim honest: fake countdowns and false "only 2 left" messages are named as dark patterns.

Diwali marketing is everything you do to reach customers who are buying for the festival: gifts, sweets, decorations, new clothes and household goods. This guide gives you a calendar from today to after Diwali, 15 ideas that suit small businesses, and the mistakes that cost money.

Why Diwali matters for small businesses

Diwali is one of the biggest shopping seasons of the year for Indian businesses.

  • The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimated Diwali 2025 trade at a record ₹6.05 lakh crore. Its category shares included grocery and FMCG 12%, gold and jewellery 10%, gift items 7% and sweets and namkeen 5%, and it said traditional, non-corporate retail made up 85% of the trade (CAIT). CAIT's figure is a trade-body survey, not government data.
  • Online, Redseer projects the 2026 festive season to grow about 25%, with the fastest growth in everyday categories (Redseer).
Bar chart of Redseer's projected 2026 festive online growth by category, using the middle of each range: grocery 49%, beauty and personal care 37.5%, home and furniture 33.5%, mobiles 6%.

Redseer also reported that the first two days of the 2026 festive sales brought in about ₹24,000 crore of online sales, with buyers from Tier 2 cities and rural areas making up nearly two-thirds (Indiantelevision.com). Festive buyers are everywhere, not only in metros.

Your Diwali 2026 calendar

The central government's holiday list puts Diwali on Sunday, 8 November 2026 (StaffNews); its restricted holiday list includes Govardhan Puja on 9 November and Bhai Duj on 11 November (Gconnect). Dhanteras and other days fall around it, and dates can differ by region and calendar, so check your local panchang.

15 Diwali marketing ideas for small businesses

Products and offers

1. A festive collection. Group your festive products in one place: "Diwali gifts", "Puja essentials", "Sweets and dry fruits". Customers find what they came for faster.

2. Ready gift boxes at three prices. For example ₹499, ₹999 and ₹1,999. Three clear prices make choosing easy. Our guide to the gift hamper business covers packing and GST on hampers.

3. One clear offer. Pick one: free delivery above a threshold, a small gift above an order value, or an early-bird price for orders placed by a set date. One offer is easy to understand and easy to protect.

4. Bundles. Diya set plus rangoli colours; dry fruits plus a gift box; kurta plus dupatta. Bundles raise the order value without cutting prices.

5. Corporate gifting. If you sell to offices, reach them before they finalise their gift lists. Send a one-page catalogue with three price levels and delivery to many addresses.

Reaching customers

6. Message your existing customers first. They already trust you. WhatsApp, push notifications and email to people who opted in cost little and reach people who already know you. See push notification ideas.

7. Festive Instagram Reels. Show gift boxes being packed, sweets being made, diyas being painted. See how to sell on Instagram.

8. Update your Google Business Profile. Add festive photos, special opening hours and a post about your Diwali collection. See getting your business on Google Maps.

9. A festive banner on your website that links straight to the collection, not the home page.

10. Referral offer. "Gift ₹100, get ₹100" when a friend orders. See how to start a referral program.

Photograph your festive gift boxes early, and use the same photos everywhere.

Ordering and delivery

11. Clear delivery cut-offs. "Order by 5 November for delivery before Diwali." Put it on the website, in messages and at checkout.

12. A gift message and delivery to another address. If you sell gifts, let buyers add a message and send the order to someone else.

13. Extra delivery capacity. Add helpers for packing and delivery in the last week; plan routes by area. See planning delivery routes.

14. Recover carts. Festive shoppers compare; remind those who left a cart within an hour. See recovering abandoned carts.

After Diwali

15. Follow up. Thank every customer, ask for a review, and give a reason to come back, such as reward points or a New Year collection. See getting repeat customers.

Protect your margin

Deep discounts in a season when customers are already buying can give away profit. Before you discount, see discount and coupon ideas, which shows how many extra sales a discount needs just to break even. Prefer:

  • Free delivery above a threshold instead of a percentage off everything.
  • A small gift with larger orders instead of a bigger discount.
  • Bundles instead of price cuts.

Keep it honest

The Central Consumer Protection Authority notified Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns on 30 November 2023. They apply to platforms systematically offering goods or services in India, and to advertisers and sellers, and the first pattern they list is false urgency: falsely stating or implying urgency or scarcity (Verdictum).

  • A countdown timer must end when it says it ends.
  • "Only 2 left" must be true.
  • The price shown must include every charge before checkout.

Mistakes to avoid

Starting the week of Diwali. Customers have already bought. Start with what you can do today.

Ten offers at once. Several offers at once are harder to explain and harder to protect.

Discounting everything. Your margin is your profit for the season.

No delivery cut-off. Late orders that miss Diwali become complaints.

Fake urgency. It is a named dark pattern and it damages trust.

Forgetting to follow up. Diwali customers are next year's regulars if you thank them.
