To promote your business online for free, start with a complete Google Business Profile if you meet customers in person, free product listings on Google if you sell products, and WhatsApp for the customers you already have. Add one or two social channels you can post on every week, such as Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, and list your business in free directories. Send all of it to one place where people can order.
Free promotion here means channels that cost no money per post or per click. They still cost time, so the order below starts with the channels that need the least setup for a local business.
Why free channels can work in India
Your customers are already online. IAMAI's latest figures count 958 million active internet users, of whom 588 million watch short video and around 230 million urban users shopped online in the past year (Tele.net, reporting the IAMAI figures).
The big platforms reach a large share of them. DataReportal's Digital 2026: India gives advertising reach figures from the platforms' own tools for late 2025:
These are audience figures from ad tools, not counts of unique people, but they show where attention is. You can reach a share of it without paying, if you post things people want to see.
1. Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Search and Maps. Google says you can manage how your business shows up on Maps and Search at no charge (Google).
Two rules to know:
- It is only for businesses that make face-to-face contact with customers, such as shops, restaurants, or businesses that deliver to or visit customers. Online-only businesses are not eligible.
- Local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking (Google).
Our step-by-step guide to getting your business on Google Maps covers setup, verification, photos and reviews.
2. Free product listings on Google
If you sell products, upload them to Google Merchant Center. Google's free listings can show your products at no cost on Google Search, Google Maps, Gemini and YouTube (Google Merchant Center Help). This works for online-only stores too.
What you need:
- A website with a product page for each product, showing the price and how to buy.
- Clear product photos and accurate prices. Our guide to taking product photos with a phone shows how.
- A product feed or a connection from your store software.
Our guide to SEO for an online store explains how product pages get found in normal search results too.
3. WhatsApp Status and a WhatsApp Channel
WhatsApp reaches the customers who already have your number.
- Status: post today's fresh stock, a new arrival or a short video. Customers see it when you have saved each other's numbers, depending on your status privacy settings.
- Channel: a one-way broadcast that people choose to follow. WhatsApp says channel admins' phone numbers and profile photos are not shown to followers, and channel history is kept for up to 30 days (WhatsApp).
Our guide to selling on WhatsApp Business covers catalogues, quick replies and when to move orders to a website.
Warning: Do not add customers to groups or send bulk messages without their agreement. It annoys people and can get your number restricted.
4. Instagram Reels and posts
Instagram suits products people like to look at: food, clothes, jewellery, cakes, flowers, home decor. Post short videos of the product being made, packed or used. Put your ordering link in your bio and reply to every comment and message. See our full guide to selling on Instagram.

5. YouTube Shorts
YouTube Shorts can now be up to three minutes long for videos uploaded from 15 October 2024 in square or vertical format (YouTube Help). The same short videos you make for Instagram can go here too. Name each video with what people search: "eggless chocolate cake home delivery Pune" says more than "Sunday special".
6. Free business directories
Free listings help customers who search directories, and help search engines confirm your name, address and phone.
| Directory | Good for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Justdial | Local services and shops | Free listing available |
| IndiaMART | Wholesale and B2B products | Free; add at least three products, your address and your GST number. IndiaMART says the listing can take up to 7 days to appear (IndiaMART) |
| Bing Places | Bing search and maps | Can import from Google Business Profile |
| Apple Business Connect | Apple Maps | Useful if many customers use iPhones |
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone everywhere.
7. Your existing customers
The cheapest promotion is a happy customer telling a friend. Make it easy:
- Ask for a Google review after a good order.
- Run a referral offer where both people get a reward: see how to start a referral program.
- Put your website or app link on bills, bags and delivery boxes.
8. Local community groups
Neighbourhood WhatsApp groups, apartment notice boards and local Facebook groups can bring early customers. Follow each group's rules, offer something useful (a launch offer, a free sample day), and post once, not every day.
9. Content on your own website
A useful page on your own website keeps bringing visitors for months: "How to store fresh fish at home" for a fish shop, or "Cake sizes and how many people they serve" for a bakery. It answers what customers search for and links to your products.
10. Collaborations with other local businesses
A bakery and a florist can promote each other's birthday orders. A gym and a healthy tiffin service can share customers. Swap a post, a flyer in each other's delivery bags, or a joint offer.
A first-week plan
| Day | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Create or claim your Google Business Profile (if you meet customers) |
| 2 | Add 10 real photos, opening hours and your ordering link to the profile |
| 3 | Set up Merchant Center and submit your products for free listings |
| 4 | Add your ordering link to WhatsApp Business, Instagram bio and YouTube |
| 5 | Post your first short video on Reels and Shorts |
| 6 | List your business in two free directories |
| 7 | Ask five happy customers for a Google review |
Measure what brings orders
Likes and views are not sales. Each month, check:
- Orders by source: ask "How did you hear about us?" at checkout, or use separate links for each channel.
- Google Business Profile actions: calls, website clicks and direction requests.
- Free listing clicks in Merchant Center.
- Which posts brought messages or orders.
Keep the two channels that bring orders and drop the ones that do not.
Mistakes to avoid
Trying every channel at once. Two channels done every week beat six done once.
No place to order. A post that says "DM to order" loses people who want to order at 11 pm.
Different names and numbers everywhere. It confuses customers and search engines.
Buying followers or reviews. It breaks platform rules and does not bring real customers.
Only posting offers. Show how things are made, packed and delivered too.
