How markup works

Selling price = cost × (1 + markup). A cost of 200 with a 50% markup sells for 300.

The margin on that sale is lower than the markup: 100 profit on a 300 price is a 33.3% margin.

Many shops use a standard markup per category, then adjust for competition and demand.

Common questions

Is markup the same as margin?
No. Markup is profit divided by cost; margin is profit divided by price. A 100% markup is a 50% margin.
What markup should I use?
Start from your costs and what similar products sell for. Many retailers mark up between 50% and 100%, and handmade goods often more, but your own numbers matter most.
